Question...
Does being good at mathematics really make a difference when it comes to playing chess? Will being good at it improve your game more then someone who's not good at it? Cause to tell you the truth, i hated it (and sucked at it because of that). Just wondering...

I dont think there is a connection between the two. Mathematical calculations are of a different kind than chess calculations. To calculate chess moves we need visualisation and no numbers.
But there is a connection, I think, between chess and mathematics if we look at the interest that chess players and mathematicians have to investigate a problem and try to solve it with a rational approach.
Okay... Thank's for your comment Manju :-)
Anybody else got something to say about it?
I think there is a general connection between mathematics and chess. Many good chess player also excel at math. It don't think it's an absolute requirement, but it a common occurance. I don't need to tell you that Max Euwe had a doctorate in mathematics and Botvinnik was an electrical engineer.
Your bio says you only play over the net. I'm surprised since the Netherlands has such a fine chess history and many people play.
I'm not a "Knight" but I blog about my road to chess improvement the same.
Chess is one of many games described by the mathematical theory of games- created by John Von Neumann.
I think it is something called a two-person game of perfect information, if my memory serves me correctly.
Also, mathematical graph theory is useful ( tree-searching algorithms, etc.) for creating chess computer programs.
Obviously, the nuts and bolts of math ( that is theorem proving ) has nothing whatsoever to do with the nuts and bolts of finding good moves at the chessboard ( at least for a human.)
Hello Christopher,
Nice to hear you appreciate our chess history :-)
Indeed i only play over the net... But i defenitly want to join a club at some point. I just want to make sure i am able to play a decent game before i do...
BTW, i will add you on my sidebar as well as on my bloglines list, so i can keep track of your blog as well.
Thank's for commenting on my blog.
It appears you was allready part of my sidebar :-)
